Entertainment: No one wants to lie bored in a hospital bed, pre- or post-surgery. Rather discuss all medication with your care team. However, please do not self-medicate in the ward – it can be unsafe to combine different medications, and this may result in a fall. Medication: Bring current medicines in their original packaging. Some patients also prefer to decant only enough supplies for a few days stay, instead of bringing the full bottles from home. Speak to your care team about bed baths, bathing and showering after your surgery, as this will impact your need to bring other items like shampoo, washcloths, soap and razors. Don’t forget containers for dentures and eyeglasses/ spectacles too, if applicable. Enough to make you comfortable and freshen up a bit.
Personal Toiletries: Bring your usual toiletries, like a hairbrush, toothpaste, toothbrush, moisturiser, lip balm and deodorant. A small overnight bag will be more than sufficient for your stay. A small overnight bag: Space is limited, and you want to be able to find your items as fast as possible amongst all your things. During Covid-19, please also remember to wear your mask on admission. And don’t forget a pen! Having a pen on hand is always helpful for filling in forms and surveys (and for completing your crossword puzzle or word search). We recommend you bring your ID document, Medical Aid card and any other preoperative paperwork that might be useful to have on file or to refer to. Admission paperwork: Being admitted to hospital always involves a little admin. While our friendly nurses and staff will always be available to answer any questions you may have, we have put together a list of things to pack and some top tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your hospital stay pre- and post- your knee or hip surgery. It is not uncommon, the night before heading to the hospital, to wonder where even to start. Sometimes a very practical task – like packing your bag for the hospital before surgery, can be very overwhelming, especially when you are in pain and have a well-meaning family member offering to help you. A small hand towel (if you don’t want to use the one the hospital provides).Packing for the Hospital & Other Helpful Tips. A small blanket (if you want to have the comforts of home). Pillow with a non-white pillowcase (if you want to have the comforts of home). Healthy snacks (especially if you’re a picky eater and don’t want to get stuck eating hospital food). Ipad or computer to watch movies (you may need to check with the hospital or facility on what they allow). Makeup essentials like lip gloss & mascara (if you received a facial procedure, ask your surgeon about how soon you can apply makeup as you may want to wait a bit). Mini dry shampoo (you may not be able to shower for a while). Comfortable going home outfit (loose shirt, zip-up sweatshirt, loose pants). Slip-on shoes (it may be difficult to bend down). Clean underwear for the duration of your stay. A reusable water bottle (to stay hydrated). Face wash, soap, lotion, and whatever else it takes to make you feel fresh again after surgery that your surgeon allows (the hospital often provides these, but you can bring some of your favorites if you have them). Toothbrush/toothpaste (mouth can get dry during surgery). 
Pen and paper for taking aftercare notes (or you can take them on your phone’s notes app).Headphones (for entertainment during any waiting periods).A fresh pair of underwear (you may have to remove yours during surgery).Comfortable going home outfit, which may be the same as what you came in (loose shirt, zip-up sweatshirt, loose pants, and slip-on shoes).

What you need to pack in your “hospital bag” (or “recovery bag” if you’re staying at a recovery center) will depend on where you get your surgery, where you will be recovering, what surgery you are getting, and the duration of your stay.
